How to Import from China to Thailand: A Practical Guide for 2026

Not sure where to start with importing from China? This guide walks you through every step — from finding a supplier and choosing your shipping route, to FORM-E, customs clearance, and door-to-door delivery.

How to Import from China to Thailand: A Practical Guide for 2026

Whether you're a small business owner sourcing products from Guangzhou or an individual ordering goods from Yiwu, importing from China to Thailand has never been more accessible — if you know the process. This guide walks you through every step, from choosing a shipping route to clearing customs and getting goods delivered to your door.

China remains Thailand's largest trading partner, and the logistics corridor connecting the two countries is well-developed. Understanding your options, costs, and documentation requirements upfront will save you time, money, and headaches at the border.

1. Find Your Supplier

There are three main platforms most Thai importers use:

  • 1688.com — China's largest domestic wholesale marketplace. Prices are lower because it's designed for Chinese buyers. You'll need some basic Chinese reading ability or a translation tool, but the savings are worth it.
  • Taobao.com — China's biggest retail marketplace, similar to Lazada but for Chinese consumers. Great for smaller quantities or one-off items. Prices are competitive and product variety is massive — also requires a translation tool.
  • Alibaba.com — The international version. English-friendly, with verified suppliers and Trade Assurance protection. Slightly higher prices, but much easier for first-timers.

Before placing any order, always ask your supplier:

  1. Can I get a sample before committing to a large order?
  2. What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
  3. Do you have experience exporting to Thailand and preparing customs documents?

2. Choose the Right Shipping Method

There are three main ways to ship goods from China to Thailand, each with its own balance of speed, cost, and suitability.

Road Freight (Truck / EK)

Road freight is the fastest option for most shipments. Goods travel overland through the China–Laos–Thailand corridor and arrive within 5–7 days. It's ideal for time-sensitive orders or mixed cargo in a single shipment.

Sea Freight (LCL / SEA)

Sea freight is the most economical option for large volumes. Transit time is 12–15 days. You can ship as part of a consolidated container (LCL) or book an entire container for yourself (FCL), depending on your cargo size.

Full Container Load (FCL)

For importers moving significant volumes, a dedicated container offers maximum security and control — best for high-value goods, fragile items, or large product lines that need end-to-end handling without being mixed with other cargo.

Not sure which route to choose? A simple rule: if your goods fit in a few boxes and you need them quickly, go by road. If you're moving a pallet or more and time isn't critical, sea freight will save you significantly.

3. How Much Does It Cost?

Shipping rates are calculated by CBM (cubic metre) or kilogram — whichever works out higher for your cargo. That sounds simple, but in practice there are a few moving parts: multiple boxes of different sizes, certain product types that are calculated differently, and choosing between road and sea freight in a way that actually makes sense for your specific shipment.

The easiest place to start is our free freight calculator on the official website. Enter your box dimensions, weight, and origin city and you'll get an instant estimate.

4. The Import Process — Step by Step

A well-managed import follows a clear six-stage process.

Step 1 — Register and Get Your Customer Code Register once with Fast Cargo CNX and receive a unique customer code. This code identifies your cargo throughout its entire journey. Takes just one business day to process.

Step 2 — Share the Warehouse Address with Your Supplier Give your Chinese supplier our China warehouse address and your customer code. They ship directly to our warehouse — no middlemen, no confusion. Every box must be labelled with your customer code and the shipping method (EK for road, SEA for sea). Unlabelled boxes default to road freight.

Step 3 — Goods Received & Checked in China When your goods arrive at our China warehouse, we weigh, measure, and photograph each item. Everything is packed and processed for export within 1–2 business days.

Step 4 — Goods Arrive at Thai Warehouse Once the shipment clears Thai customs, it arrives at our Chiang Mai warehouse. You'll receive a notification with the full itemised details and the confirmed freight cost for your shipment.

Step 5 — Pay & Confirm Transfer the freight fee and send proof of payment via Line or our app. Once confirmed, your delivery is scheduled — usually within 1–3 business days.

Step 6 — Delivery to Your Door Delivery within Bangkok and Greater Bangkok is included free of charge. For upcountry destinations, we coordinate with domestic carriers according to your preference. Fragile or oversized items receive special handling throughout.

5. Customs & Documentation

This is where many importers lose money without realising it.

FORM-E: The Tax Reduction Document You Must Request Before Goods Leave China

FORM-E is a Certificate of Origin issued under the ASEAN–China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA). If your goods arrive with a valid FORM-E, your import duty drops significantly — some product categories are reduced all the way to 0%.

Here's a real example of the difference (duty is calculated on the value of goods, not the freight cost):

  • Without FORM-E: Import duty of 10–30% on the declared goods value
  • With FORM-E: Import duty of 0–5% on the declared goods value

Your freight forwarder handles the FORM-E application on your behalf — but you must request it before the goods leave China. Once the shipment has departed, it cannot be done retroactively.

Documents Required for Thai Customs Clearance

When your goods reach the Thai border or seaport, they go through customs clearance. The documents required are:

  • Invoice — declares the value of the goods
  • Packing List — itemises the contents of each box
  • Bill of Lading — the shipping transport document
  • FORM-E — if you want to claim reduced duty rates

If you're using a reliable freight forwarder, they handle all of this for you — you just wait for your goods to arrive. Under normal conditions, road freight shipments clear customs and reach the Thai warehouse within 24–48 hours of crossing the border.

Always declare your goods honestly. Undervaluing goods to reduce duties is illegal and carries serious penalties. Accurate declarations protect you legally and ensure smooth clearance every time.

6. What You Can and Cannot Ship

Products Requiring Thai Industrial Standards (TIS / มอก.)

Electrical appliances, children's toys, and some automotive parts must comply with Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) before they can be sold legally in Thailand. Budget for testing and certification costs if importing these categories.

Food, Cosmetics & Health Products (Thai FDA / อย.)

Food, beverages, cosmetics, and health supplements typically require Thai FDA registration or approval before import. Confirm the specific requirements with your freight forwarder before placing your order.

Prohibited Goods

Illegal items, narcotics, certain weapons and replicas, and flammable or explosive materials cannot be shipped under any circumstances. We reserve the right to inspect and refuse any consignment, and take no responsibility for consequences arising from prohibited shipments.

7. Guangzhou vs. Yiwu: Which Sourcing Hub Is Right for You?

Guangzhou (广州)

China's manufacturing heartland — strong in electronics, fashion, furniture, and industrial goods. Home to the Canton Fair, held twice a year. Slightly lower freight rates reflect its large port infrastructure. Best for: factory-made goods, electronics, garments.

Yiwu (义乌)

Home to the world's largest wholesale commodity market. Very low minimum order quantities. Wide variety covering accessories, stationery, seasonal goods, packaging, and novelty items. Best for: traders wanting a wide range of products in smaller quantities.

8. Tips for First-Time Importers

  • Start small. Test a supplier with a small order before committing to large volumes.
  • Always get a quote first. Use our freight calculator to estimate costs before your goods ship.
  • Label every box correctly. Your customer code and shipping route (EK or SEA) must appear on every single box without exception.
  • Build lead time into your planning. Account for Chinese holidays (Golden Week, Chinese New Year), weather, and occasional customs inspections. Plan for 10–14 days from factory to door under normal conditions.
  • Tell us what you're shipping. Always send our team the product name and photos before your supplier dispatches the goods.
